People, Planet, Leadership: Driving Change for a Healthier Future

As planetary boundaries are pushed and the climate crisis deepens, the need  for bold, informed leadership in healthcare has never been more urgent. In response, BMJ Leader proudly launches its new Topic Collection on Planetary Health Leadership—a bold call to action for health system leaders to step up, speak out, and lead the way toward a healthier, more sustainable future.

We’re proud to feature representatives from the Planetary Health Report Card team, a global, student-led, and multi professional initiative working to transform education and campus sustainability within health education institutions.

Their talks will showcase the power of student leadership in advancing planetary health, with a focus on strengthening global relationships, enhancing representation, and fostering inclusive leadership.

As part of this, we will spotlight bold, innovative strategies from around the world, with a special emphasis on student-led efforts from the Global South, bringing vital perspectives to the forefront of the planetary health movement.

Andrew Garman

Planetary health leadership:

Finding our path to a healthier future

With a background in psychology and decades of experience developing leaders across health systems, Andrew explores how healthcare leadership can—and must—amplify progress on planetary health, equity, and human well-being. Drawing on his work at Rush University and global organisations such as the Geneva Sustainability Centre, he shares insights into how leadership development, organisational learning, and system-wide transformation connect to address today’s environmental and social challenges. This talk invites attendees to reimagine leadership as a powerful catalyst for change that reaches beyond institutional boundaries.

Carmen Menéndez Calzada joined the Geneva Sustainability Centre in 2022. Recognizing the vital link between addressing the climate crisis and improving health outcomes, in her capacity she has been instrumental in advancing various initiatives, notably contributing to the development of the Carbon Emissions Learning Lab and the Sustainability Accelerator Tool, and supporting IHF Members on their sustainability journey, including delivering masterclasses for Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá in Colombia. Transitioning from over five years of work in Mexico's civil society sector and collaborating as a consultant with USAID to enhance transparency and accountability in the public sector, Carmen shifted her focus to her areas of passion: environment and health. With a bachelor's degree in international relations from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and a master’s degree in development studies from the Geneva Graduate Institute, Carmen's specialization in environment, sustainability, and global health underscores her dedication to fostering positive change within these crucial areas.

Samantha Holmes

Sustainable healthcare starts at the top:

Why leadership is the missing link

With over 15 years of clinical experience in the NHS and recent fellowships spanning NHS England, the BMJ, and BMJ Leader, Sam brings a frontline and editorial perspective to planetary health. In this talk, she explores how leadership across healthcare systems can directly influence sustainability outcomes—from embedding climate-conscious thinking in clinical practice to tackling the carbon footprint of clinical trials. Drawing on her current work at the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition and her experience curating content focused on health and climate, Sam makes the case for why leadership isn’t just part of the solution—it’s where the shift must begin.
